Government agencies and contractors manage some of the most sensitive data in existence from citizen records to classified information. When electronic media and devices reach end-of-life, they must be disposed of in strict compliance with federal standards to prevent data breaches and security risks.
The NIST Special Publication 800-88 Rev. 1 (Media Sanitization) standard requires agencies and contractors to sanitize media using one of three approved methods:
- Clear (logical techniques to make data unreadable through overwriting)
- Purge (physical or logical techniques that make data unrecoverable with advanced tools)
- Destroy (shredding, pulverizing, disintegrating, or incinerating so that media cannot be reconstructed)
